Oregon IRC R905.2 wind requirements
Oregon's Residential Specialty Code adopts IRC R905.2 with state amendments. The base requirement for asphalt shingle wind resistance in Oregon residential construction is compliance with ASTM D3161 Class F (110 mph rated) at minimum, or alternatively ASTM D7158 Class H (150 mph rated) where available. Most Oregon jurisdictions allow either test method. Premium architectural shingles typically meet or exceed both.
What the wind ratings actually mean
ASTM D3161 tests shingle resistance to wind uplift in a controlled lab environment. Class A (60 mph), Class D (90 mph), Class F (110 mph), Class H (150 mph). ASTM D7158 is the newer test methodology specifically for sealed shingles with similar class breakdowns. Manufacturer claims of '130 mph' or '150 mph' are based on these tests but field performance depends heavily on whether the seal strip activates properly (warm weather install) and whether nailing is correct.
Wind ratings by product line
Most architectural shingles in the Portland market are rated 110-130 mph. GAF Timberline HDZ: 130 mph with LayerLock. OC TruDefinition Duration: 130 mph with SureNail. CertainTeed Landmark: 110 mph standard, 130 mph with SureStart Plus. IKO Cambridge: 110 mph standard, 130 mph upgrade. Malarkey Vista: 110 mph (Vista AR), 130 mph (Legacy). Class 4 impact-rated variants typically carry 130-150 mph wind ratings as well. 3-tab shingles generally rate 60-70 mph.
Portland's actual wind exposure
Portland's typical wind environment is well within standard shingle ratings. Major storms see sustained winds 30-45 mph with gusts 60-85 mph. Severe events (5-10 year return period) see gusts 90-100+ mph. Even severe events stay well below the 130-150 mph ratings on premium architectural shingles. The wind failures in Portland are almost always on aging shingles (weakened seal strips) or improperly nailed shingles, not on properly-installed in-rating shingles.
What drives field wind failures in Portland
Three main causes. (1) Seal strip failure: shingles installed in cool weather (below 40°F) without warming may not seal properly, leaving them vulnerable until summer heat activates the seal. (2) Improper nailing: nails too high (above the strip), too low (in the exposure area), too few (4 nails when 6 are required in high-wind zones), or overdriven (sinking into the shingle). (3) Aging: shingle seal strips degrade over 20-25 years; older roofs lose wind resistance even if the shingle was originally well-rated.
